Affordable Computer Repair & More!

I’m Gary Mitidiero and I’ve been working with computers since 1981 when I bought my first personal computer, a Victor 9000. To give you some idea of what computers were like “way back” then; let’s take a look at its specs.

  • Ram – 128k. At that time, it’s main competitor, the Commodore 64 had half as much. With ten times that much ram, you couldn’t load Windows today!
  • Storage – 2, 600kb floppies. Every other PC’s had only one, and they were only 360k. You would load the program disk in one drive and store the data in the second. The “Winchester” or hard drive wasn’t available yet.
  • Operating System – Now here’s the real selling feature of this computer. Not only would it run CP/M 86, the operating system of the day, it would also run DOS, the new OS being used by IBM. And, it wasn’t MS-DOS, it was just plain DOS. No version number, no support for folders (sub-directories), and worst of all – developed by some “kid” named Bill Gates.
I struggled for some time trying to learn how to get the most out of that box. I read all the manuals (YES it actually had manuals!), read books on programming, paid for schooling (terrible!), and tried everything I could think of. Then one day I was at the bookstore and saw a book on DOS, the operating system. My first thought was “Why would anyone want to know about that?” How dumb I was! But, I bought that book and finally started to understand computers.

Today, I’m still learning. As a hobby I do video editing, the most computer intense application there is. While I’ve been building my own computers for years, and occasionally build one for others, it’s not really cost effective. But, it is the only way to get maximum performance. If you're in the Chicago area (including NW Indiana), give me a call. Most solutions turn out to be less expensive than originally perceived.
